{"id":9412,"date":"2022-02-23T23:48:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T21:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dogsolutions.co.za\/course\/sustained-sits-and-stands\/"},"modified":"2023-04-26T01:53:25","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T23:53:25","slug":"sustained-sits-and-stands","status":"publish","type":"tva_lesson","link":"https:\/\/dogsolutions.co.za\/biokinetic-k9\/course\/sustained-sits-and-stands\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustained Sits and Stands"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"cursor: text;\" id=\"t-1648736802665\">Sustained Sit<\/h3>\n<p>Place your dog in a square sit &#8211; back feet, knees facing forward, spine straight and front feet directly underneath shoulder &#8211; and then ask him to hold the position for some time (extending the time to a minute of endurance). &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Holding a sustained sit requires your dog to hold their position and therefore work muscles such as adductors (inside muscles) of hips, thighs and shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Providing intermittent treats ensures that their core and spine are continuously being engaged as the dog is required to maintain the correctness of the sitting position.<\/p>\n<p>Start slow and gradually build your dog&#8217;s endurance to maintain a square sit &#8211; remember, there are loads of muscles working in the background!<\/p>\n<p>Only once your dog can hold the position for at least 10 &#8211; 15 seconds, add some weight shifting via head movements from left to right and up, down while providing intermittent treats.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be shy with paying your dog for keeping the sit position with treats! Your dog should only break the position when verbally released.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"cursor: text;\" id=\"t-1648736802666\">Equipment required<\/h4>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">A low, stable platform, ideally the width of your dog&#8217;s hips and that your dog is comfortable sitting on in a square sit. <\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Avoid a platform that is too small, creating a squashed up sitting position &#8211; front paws too close to back feet and a roaching\/hunching-over in the back. If front feet are splayed or back feet toeing out, or hocks are splayed and not parallel to one another, consider a narrower platform.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">\n<h4 style=\"cursor: text;\" id=\"t-1648736802667\">Watchpoints<\/h4>\n<p>Reward your dog in front to help your dog avoid moving their feet toward the treat.<\/p>\n<p>Your dog is having a challenging time maintaining a square sit if he:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>falls off the equipment\/platform<\/li>\n<li>starts to shift his feet while sitting<\/li>\n<li>splays his front feet or starts toeing out with his rear feet or hocks.<\/li>\n<li>has inward rotation of the knees (stifles)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Keep your repetitions short. &nbsp;Hold the square sit for a second or 2, release your dog and start again. Each time increase the period for holding the position without fidgeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">If your dog tends to sit backward on their bum and doesn&#8217;t have their knees tucked in (this is seen in some long-backed dogs), simply have your treat slightly raised and more forward when giving a reward encouraging lifting of the head with a forward reach. This will encourage the dog to reach forward in the sit and get them into a better sitting position and smoothing out the spine. <\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Placing a dog on a plank that is declined (dog sitting as if on an uphill) will help encourage a weight shift forward while sitting instead of leaning back on their bum. Left and right feet should be parallel to one another and not staggered. (Refer to the &#8220;Getting Stacked&#8221; exercise)<\/p>\n<p>Holding a sustained stacked stand requires stabilization of the core and spine, body awareness, balance and strengthening of the adductors (inside muscles) of the hips and shoulders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the sustained sit, provide intermittent treats ensuring that the core and spine are continuously being engaged as the dog is required to maintain the correctness of the standing position.<\/p>\n<p>Start slowly and gradually build your dog&#8217;s endurance! &#8211; remember, there are loads of muscles working in the background to hold the spine and joint stabilizers of the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees steady.<\/p>\n<p>Only once your dog can hold the position for at least 10 &#8211; 15 seconds, add some weight shifting via head movements from left to right and up, down while providing intermittent treats.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the weight shifting is to challenge your dog&#8217;s balance so that they engage their core and small stabilizer muscles. During this time, your dog&#8217;s feet may not move. &nbsp;We are asking for the body to remain still while the head moves alone. The bigger the head movement or weight shift, the more the core and stabilizers need to engage to keep the body still.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"t-1648736802670\">Watchpoints<\/h4>\n<p>Reward in front of your dog to help your dog avoid moving their feet toward the treat.<\/p>\n<p>Ensure that your dog maintains:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a stable topline (no dipping or roaching while increasing the endurance of the stand)<\/li>\n<li>the stand with NO movement of the feet or fidgeting while in the position &#8211; feet should remain even throughout the exercise<\/li>\n<li>even balance on front and rear feet &#8211; no shifting of weight forward or backwards while in the stand<\/li>\n<li>even balance on left and right side &#8211; no shifting of weight to the left or the right of front or rear feet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only once your dog can hold these criteria for at least 10 &#8211; 15 seconds can you add any progressions or weight-shifting.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"t-1648736802671\">Progressions<\/h4>\n<p>Only progress if your dog can hold a stacked stand as described above for 10 &#8211; 15 seconds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Increase repetitions of the sustained stand<\/p>\n<p>Use weight shifts with head movements<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Walk around your dog ensuring they remain standing<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Touch your dog&#8217;s body, while they remain standing, apply pressure against the body while they hold their position without moving their feet and then release the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Increase your standing time (60 &#8211; 90 seconds)<\/p>\n<p>Use narrower platforms or unstable platforms such as an exercise foam pad on either front or back feet and then at both front and rear feet.<\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"9414\" width=\"800\" data-init-width=\"1280\" height=\"450\" data-init-height=\"720\" title=\"Artemis -
