Start with the distance between the boards being the dog’s natural stand position.

We will position the back feet a bit further backward as we progress, so when your dog progresses, they will eventually reach a balanced position with their hind feet perpendicular to the ground. We will achieve this by moving one platform a LITTLE further apart each day as we practice the stand.

The Goal of this Exercise

Your dog should target their front and hind feet on two separate pieces of equipment.

They should be standing in a natural and strong stack position – with front paws underneath shoulders and back hocks perpendicular to the ground.

Both front and hind feet should be even distance from one another (left and right).

Your dog should be able to hold this position for varying lengths of time.

Progressions in this exercise

Front Feet Targeting

Start by getting the front feet onto a platform and rewarding generously. Repeat the exercise each time by tossing a treat behind the dog and calling him to come to you and place his front feet on the platform. Throwing the treat behind your dog will encourage him to come to you in a straight line, and it will then be easier for him to place his feet on a platform in front of him. REMEMBER that conditioning is about setting your dog up for success.

Rear Feet Targeting

Then move to rear foot targeting by tossing the treat behind the dog and calling him to you. Let him step over the board with his front feet only and stop him from stepping off the board with his back feet and reward him for having his back feet on the board.

Success tip: if he steps over the board with his back feet, get a bigger board! – set your dog up for success! 🙂

Repeat the treat toss and recall your dog. Reward each time he approaches, stopping him with his rear feet coming onto the board—reward generously. This is not an easy concept for them to understand, and they cannot see what their back feet are doing; they can only feel.

Bringing It Together

Using both boards in a distance that is the same distance apart as your dog’s NATURAL stand position, repeat as above: toss the treat behind the dog and call him to stand in front of you with front feet on the front platform and rear feet on the back platform.

Only once your dog has achieved this position correctly at least 4-5 times can you start moving the one board a little further back (not more than 2cm/1inch at a time) to work on the square stand- back hocks perpendicular to the ground and front legs directly under the shoulders.

Remember that this exercise will be more difficult for an angulated dog to perform, so please be patient with them.

HINT: Work towards your dog standing with their rear feet at the FRONT EDGE of the back board and the front feet at the FRONT EDGE of the front board. If your dog understands that the edge of the board has value, we can control their feet much more, which will become very valuable with the later exercises.

Only progress on this exercise if your dog is able to:

Stand in a balanced stack position on two stable pieces of equipment:

Front/hind paws should be even

Front paws should be directly underneath the dog’s shoulders

Hind hocks should be perpendicular to the ground

Your dog should be able to remain in the standing position for different lengths of time between 2 – 15 seconds while you stand in front of him.

Your dog should be able to hold the position by himself and on his own without the food lure on his nose.

Progressions

Build up the length of time that your dog can hold the square stand to 30 and 45 seconds. Add forward “pumps” while the dog is standing during this time by holding your treat 2-3 inches in front of the dog’s muzzle so that your dog simply reaches forward to get the treat without moving its feet.

Add more repetitions (max of 10)

Add more sets (max of 3)

Use smaller platforms if you are still on the larger back platform, and then you can start using smaller platforms for both the front foot and back foot targets.

Videos –
