Because we are repeating the movements each time, you may inadvertently cause muscles to develop differently on the left and right sides of the body and start to cause muscle imbalances.

We want the muscles to develop evenly on the left and right sides of the body by asking for the dog’s head to remain forward. This is more easily achieved by having you stand in front of the dog for the treat delivery.

Vary the time you want the dog to hold this position between 2 – 5 seconds at the start and build from there for longer times. If your dog starts to move his feet (happy feet) be more generous with your rewards when he is standing still and then release him from the position and start again. As they become stronger, they will be able to hold the position longer.

Hint: if your dog’s back legs are wide or too close to the box, add a platform that encourages a narrower stance and place the platform at a point that encourages the dog to stand with perpendicular hocks.

Only ask for more precise work as your dog becomes familiar with the exercise and is strong enough to hold himself in position. This does not happen overnight, so be patient with your dog.

Remember to start slow and build your dog’s confidence with the equipment first before asking for precision and don’t forget to reward often.

Progressions

Before adding any further challenges to this exercise (such as a rock-back sit or pivot), ensure that your dog:

first meets the posture criteria set out above

can hold the position for at least 10 seconds.

is able to wait to be released (avoid self-releasing as this can be too energetic and cause an injury)

can complete 8 repetitions with proper form

Once you have achieved this, then feel free to progress as follows:

Add extra repetitions with correct posture criteria (max of 15)

Add more sets (max of 3)

Increase the speed of repetitions

Place the dog in a sit approx. half a meter (1-2 feet) [depending on the size of your dog] away from the elevated box and ask him to place his front feet on it from a sit

Feel free to use different pieces of equipment, even a tree stump outside, of different heights

Use smaller or narrow objects (e.g. 2 x 2 pieces of wood, a brick or paw pods)

Exercise Videos – Elevated Front Foot Targeting (pop-up)

Video 1 – Treat placement for front feet elevated

This video demonstrates just how important treat placement is. If the treat placement is too low, we take the weight shift off the back legs and move it onto the shoulders and do not get the muscles along the spine to contract and hold.

Treat placement should be high to get the head to reach and place the spine heck and head in a straight line.

Video 2 – Artemis performing front feet raised on an elevated

In this video I am using a back platform to help with posture, and I am asking him to hold the position with some extra “pumps” or forward stretches.

Video 3 – Artemis performing front feet raised on an elevated with added Rock-Back Sit

A larger dog powering onto a platform – it is important to ensure that the platform is stable and does not tip over. At 1:20 I try a manual adjustment and then at 1:44 se gets the idea (with bells on!)

At 2:20 she starts showing first signs of fatigue – this was a long session.

Video 5 – Attica’s second session later on

She shows a much better understanding of the exercise with better control. We due repetitions through performing a rock-back sit with the exercises.
