Your next steps involve two areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Evaluate your dog and then start implementing, starting with Foundations.<\/p>\n

Foundational skills are the basis for every conditioning program.  A dog must know these first <\/strong>before he can progress to targeted training for strength, flexibility, proprioception, and balance to enhance his sport.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

REMEMBER:  <\/h3>\n

Sport training is not the problem – JUST<\/span> sport training is the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Things you can do right now include ensuring that you do a warm-up and a cool-down before and after you train or trial.<\/p>\n

Check your dog’s body! Check the performance, the movements, and the body’s positions, statically and in movement.<\/p>\n

Ensure your dog is maintaining a proper body condition score of about 4.<\/p>\n

Monitor your training so that you do not push young dogs too hard, especially before their growth plates are closed.<\/p>\n

Allow muscles to recover. Under-recovery will hamper your progress and increase your risk of injury. Keep your dogs hydrated to ensure mental and physical focus.<\/p>\n

And then ensure targeted strength and core work for optimal control or movements in your sport.<\/p>\n

Many of these things you can incorporate right, right away.<\/p>\n

If you are a top competitor or moving to become one, focus on understanding the importance of sport conditioning, or find a coach who understands conditioning for your sport and your dog<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A conditioning coach is different to a training coach. Training coaches help with the sport and the execution and training of the exercise, while a conditioning coach helps you perform exercises that target and build the correct muscles to support your dog’s body for optimal execution of the sporting requirements. Your conditioning coach analyses your dog’s sport to help prevent compensations and muscle imbalances from becoming a hindrance, and to manage fatigue and recovery to reduce the risk of injury. A conditioning coach forms part of your training team.<\/p>\n
