{"id":6603,"date":"2022-02-23T21:58:20","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T19:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebiokinetick9.com\/?post_type=tva_lesson&#038;p=6603"},"modified":"2023-09-21T21:50:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T19:50:54","slug":"dynamic-stretching","status":"publish","type":"tva_lesson","link":"https:\/\/thebiokinetick9.com\/biokinetic-k9\/course\/dynamic-stretching\/","title":{"rendered":"Dynamic Stretching and Manual Weight Shifts"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"t-1645617976091\" style=\"cursor: text;\">Dynamic Stretching<\/h3>\n<p>Most strength training involves loads of contractions from various muscles and muscle groups to get muscles stronger.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">The plus side is that the muscle gets stronger, but the downside is that many contractions shorten muscles and cause them to become &#8220;tighter&#8221; and less flexible. <\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Short, tight muscles do not get any strength training gains, have less power and are more prone to creating compensatory use of alternate muscles to &#8220;get the job done&#8221; in training. These compensations inevitably lead to muscle imbalances which lead to an increased risk of muscle injuries or strains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>For a muscle to be truly strong, it also requires pliability or flexibility in order to grow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">For these reasons, it is super important to ensure flexibility of large muscle groups when performing strength training.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Flexibility and mobility of muscles are required to ensure full range of motion (ROM) of the joints that the muscles are using and protecting.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit of flexibility is increased mobility, <strong>BUT<\/strong> too muscle flexibility, or hypermobility, results in weaker muscles. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is important therefore, that we find a happy balance of muscle strength and full, strong and powerful mobility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">To do this, you would have noticed, that <strong><em>some of the strength exercises we covered also incorporated a dynamic stretching of the muscles <\/em><\/strong>while strengthening them at the same time.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"cursor: text;\" id=\"t-1648737651879\"><strong>Some Dynamic Stretches include the following:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">Front feet on an elevated target<\/span><\/strong> (stretches out the whole hip flexor region along with the iliopsoas muscle and provides super stretching out and lengthening of the whole spinal area)<\/li>\n<li \"\"=\"\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">Play Bows<\/span> <\/strong>(stretches out shoulder region, triceps along with the latissimus dorsi [large back] muscles, hamstrings and glute muscles)<\/li>\n<li \"\"=\"\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">Holding a high-5<\/span><\/strong> (an alternative stretch for shoulders and back to the Play Bow)<\/li>\n<li \"\"=\"\"><strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">Plank<\/span><\/strong> (stretches the hip flexors and iliopsoas)<\/li>\n<li \"\"=\"\">and then there are <strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">Cookie Stretches<\/span><\/strong> (whole spinal region) <strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">Body Weight Shift<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--tva-skin-color-0);\">s<\/span> (stabilizer muscles and balance activator)!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">When executing these dynamic stretched positions and building up the holding time from 3 seconds to a 10 &#8211; 15 second hold are dynamic, static stretches &#8211; The dog gets himself into the position and must contract his muscles in the stretched position (contraction while stretching or strengthening a muscle in a lengthened position against gravitational pull is also known as an eccentric contraction and is much more demanding on a muscle than a standard contraction of muscle.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A good stretch may help with muscle relaxation too, just as it does for humans!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"t-1645617976083\" style=\"cursor: text;\">When should we do these dynamic stretch exercises?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">These exercises or stretched positions are an important and <strong>integral part of strength training and should be performed at least twice a week. You may include them:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>on rest days <em>after<\/em> a walk<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: text;\"><strong>within your strength training program <em>after <\/em>exercises<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>in your cool down <em>after<\/em> training or trials as a body check<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>in order to maintain joint function and range of motion. You may repeat these 2 to 3 times as a set.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"t-1645617976084\" style=\"cursor: text;\">Videos regarding Stretching, the Various Stretches and Weight Shifts<\/h3>\n<h4 id=\"t-1645617976085\">Video 1: Below is a live discussion on the Simple Rules for Stretching.<\/h4>\n<h3 id=\"t-1645617976086\" style=\"cursor: text;\">Video 2: Nose Target and Body Weight Shifts<\/h3>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">These movements are about simply shifting body weight either with a slight reach or stretch of the head and neck or with hand pressure on the side of the shoulder, ribs or hips.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">\n<h4 id=\"t-1645617976087\">With regards to Nose Target Shifts of the head:<\/h4>\n<p>These are also known as Cookie Shifts. We ask only for natural shifts up and down, left and right while your dog keeps his feet static in a stacked stand position throughout the movements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: as soon as your dog must move his front feet to reach the target, you have moved onto Cookie Stretches which is a different exercise incorporating dynamic stretching rather than weight shifting.<\/p>\n<p>Ensure controlled movements of the head either with a food lure or by asking for a nose target and position your hand at the appropriate target place (left, right, up, down)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up and down shifts of the head transfers weight from back to front of the dog:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking up transfers weight shifting to the rear legs<\/li>\n<li>Looking down transfers weight shifting to the front legs<\/li>\n<li>Looking to the left transfers weight to the right side of the body<\/li>\n<li>Looking to the right transfers weight to the left side of the body<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-empty=\"true\">\n<h4 id=\"t-1645617976088\">Body Weight Shifts<\/h4>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">With the dog standing on a flat surface facing forward, place your hand at either the shoulder, rib area or hips and apply slight pressure. &nbsp;Ensure your dog does not move position, but rather presses against your hand to avoid moving and quickly release your hand pressure. This engages loads of stabilizer and balancing muscles in order for the dog not to move his feet.<\/p>\n<p>This is our first attempt:<\/p>\n<p><strong>And this is a 2nd attempt later that same day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Look how quickly a dog can learn something new! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h5 id=\"t-1645617976090\" style=\"cursor: text;\">Progressions:<\/h5>\n<p style=\"cursor: text;\">Increase your repetitions and duration of holding from 3 &#8211; 7 seconds while on the flat ground.<\/p>\n<p>These weight shifting exercises may be performed with front or rear feet elevated.<\/p>\n<p>Using unstable surfaces, under the front feet or rear feet adds to the difficulty in maintaining balance while shifting body weight.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, unstable surfaces may be added at different heights for front and rear feet or under both front and rear feet.
