For dogs that are very angulated in the rear, a natural stand.

Ensure that their topline in straight – no dipping or roaching along the spine and front feet directly underneath the shoulders.

You will be asking your dog to lift their chest sightly back and up – weight shifting onto the rear feet (while still in a stand) and then powering from the rear upwards in quick succession to lift the chest up and forward to the starting point and landing with the front legs on the elevated target.

Because we are repeating the motion and landing with front feet onto a target each time, I prefer an exercise foam pad to absorb the impact on the front legs. As the dog becomes stronger in the core and rear legs while performing this exercise, the impact will be less as they are able to control the landing more – the practice of the controlled landing in the Twist-Ups and Power-Ups will pay off here.

Your dog should not move their rear feet as you do your repetitions.

Starting in a natural stand – ensure feet are even.

Place your hand above and slightly behind your dog’s head and ask them to “pop” up and touch your hand with their nose.

Watchpoints

Do NOT place your hand in front of their head as this will cause them to simply push forward.

Remember: the goal of the exercise is to first shift weight backward on to the rear legs and then push upward – and then only, forward.

The dog should not remain in the air. Do not ask them to pause while in mid-air, standing on hind legs, straight up as this places unnecessary pressure on the lower spine and sacroiliac joint (SIJ) especially as this is a repetitive exercise.

To help ensure that this does not happen, only reward when all 4 feet are on the ground. Only ask for a “pop-up” where the spine reaches a 45-degree angle to the ground. We want to avoid the angle of the “Sit -Pretty) where the spine is straight up (90 degrees) from the ground.

Watch for signs of fatigue where there is loss of balance, control and the inability to keep the rear feet still while executing the repetitions and offering alternate behaviors, positions.

Ensure you start each repetition from a square stand.

Progression

Build and work up to 10 repetitions.

Increase the number of repetitions to 2 sets of 8 – 10.

Increase the height of the front elevated target – no higher than your dog’s chest. Unstable equipment for the rear feet should be no more than a low exercise foam pad. When placing the rear feet on an exercise foam pad, ensure that the front feet are higher than the rear feet.

A caution about inflatable equipment:

I would not use inflatable equipment on the rear feet – instability detracts from strength and too much instability poses an injury risk. For the rear feet, an exercise foam pad is all you need.

When using unstable equipment for the front feet, I prefer an exercise foam pad to inflatables for this exercise. If you are using an inflatable such as an inflatable disc or a fit bone, please ensure that they are not over-inflated as this may cause your dog to slip and injure themselves. Discs that are overinflated are exceptionally unstable and challenging, and for me, just not worth the risk for this exercise.

Video of the Exercise

Video 1: Attica demonstrates the part of the Pop-Up

Here we practice keeping the rear feet still on each repetition. Starting from a square sit, ask for the “pop-up” onto a raised front platform – the progression in the Power Up exercise.

Video 2: Attica – Pop-Ups

In this video, I would prefer her rear feet to have the hocks perpendicular to the ground in the stand.
