They are 30cm x 60cm (1ft x 2ft) in size and are suitable for many exercises with a large GSD.

2

HOW I TRAIN THIS IMPORTANT 1ST STEP

– FRONT FEET

The video above contains an unedited video of how I train foot targets with my dog, Artemis, an adult GSD.

Start with a simple luring and walking forward onto a SINGLE board. Reward your dog for getting the FRONT feet onto the board. Remember to be generous with your treats and praise when you get a successful attempt.

Use a “marker word” like “Yes!” or clicker to mark the desired result along with your treats and repeat.

Each time you need to repeat the exercise, simply throw a treat away from the board so that the dog has to walk towards you and the board again in order to get the next treat from your hand – this is called a “reset treat toss” or “reset cookie”. and repeat the step above for the front feet.

3

HOW I TRAIN THIS IMPORTANT 1ST STEP

– BACK FEET

I used the same method to target the back feet onto the board. Still using a single board, instead of rewarding for the front feet, I will ask him to walk over the board with his front feet until his back feet are touching or standing on the board. As soon as this happens, I will “click” or mark the result with a “yes!” and reward with loads of treats and then repeat.

Again, each time you need to repeat the exercise, throw a “reset” treat behind the dog and start again by asking him to come towards you, walk over the board with the front feet and help through luring to get his back feet onto the board and praise with the “click” / “yes” and provide treats!

You see, in the video, I start him on the bigger boards (they are easier to target, and I would recommend this as a start). The bigger board is more versatile for starting with a large dog. Once your dog has the idea, it is easier to show them how to target on a smaller board (as in this video), which requires more precision.

The method of teaching, however, remains very much the same.

** If you are just starting out, feel free to use a larger board to have easier success with this exercise, as many, many dogs, especially when asking for their rear feet to step onto the target, will very politely step over the board each time! 🙂

So feel free to start with a large board (large enough so that the dog cannot step over it with their rear feet). Once the dog understands that you are asking him to step onto the board with his rear feet, then only start looking at slowly reducing the size of a board.

4

HOW I TRAIN THIS IMPORTANT 1ST STEP

– BRINGING IT TOGETHER

Place the two boards on the floor. The distance apart should be the same as your dog’s natural stand, generally back feet under their hips and front feet under the shoulders.

This is important for very angulated dogs as they may not yet be able to stand in a four point stacked stand as yet – with both their rear hocks perpendicular to the ground. Less angulated dogs will be able to get to this position easier, but for angulated dogs we will only “work towards this position” later on.

With both boards on the floor, repeat the same method as before – toss a treat and lure your dog over the first board until he is able to place his front feet on the bboard closest to you and ask him to feel for the back board with his rear feet.

This will take some practice! Be patient and smile a lot!

You will see in the video how your dogs will try to feel for the boards with their feet. Try not to hold the treat too high to start as this will hinder their ability to see the boards as they try to approach you and then place their front feet on the front board.

Always be encouraging throughout these exercises. There is loads of learning going on in your dog’s brain – help him to learn and understand as he feel around to place front feet on the front board and rear feet on the back board.

Repeat by tossing a “reset treat” and repeat the exercises. Try not to train too long as mental and physical fatigue will set in and success will become scarce. Practice time of 10 – 15 minutes is more than enough.

Sometimes you can give some partial reward for “intention” or “half success” and then bigger rewards for when they get it right!!

If at any time there is an unsuccessful attempt, rather than forcing a difficult situation, simply “reset” and toss a “reset treat” and start again.

5

REMEMBER

Safety and comfort come FIRST when introducing ANY piece of equipment to your dog.

Always ensure your board, platform or foot-target is secure, non-slip and does not easily move around on the floor.

Your goal is for your dog to be confident that whatever he has to step on will safely carry his weight and that he is safe. You do not want to instill hesitancy or mistrust in his equipment.

Ensure that your dog can do this exercise easily and willingly. Build up to ensuring a stationary position for at least 15 – 30 – 45 seconds in duration with no foot movement.

Ensure that while standing your dogs have a neutral, flat top-line along the back – watch for roaching or sagging in the topline.

Ensure treat placement is positioned so the head is neutral and that the nose runs parallel to the floor. Do not hold the treat so that their head is continually reaching upward or rolling downward to the floor. We are simple looking for a neutral stand at this stage.

My Foot Targeting Boards

Foot targeting boards

To start, I used the bigger board in this photo. It is an ex-shelf that I used and cut in half to create two (2) boards.

They are covered with rubber matting which I initially nailed to the board with flat heat nails, but I eventually bought a staple gun – a much better option!!

The boards are non-slip on top and I placed some pieces of rubber on the bottom too for safety.
